SUMMER CAMP 2023

Redefining Authenticity: A collective exploration of the advantages and Disadvantages of Embracing AI for the Evolution of Visual Arts

Join us as artists, students, and curious minds gather in Helsingør to experiment, learn from one another, and together explore perspectives on how algorithmically generated content and AI tools are changing the fields of visual arts and culture.

Summer Camp 2023 focuses on the questions surrounding algorithmically generated content, and the possibilities and challenges this technology presents on a structural level, as well as for the individual actors in the field of visual arts.

How are these technologies changing the way art and culture are produced and consumed today? How is it changing our notions of authenticity and authorship, and what are the ethical implications? Together, we’ll explore these questions through practical workshops, group discussions, and presentations by professionals from the fields of art and culture, such as artist Jared Madere (US), associate professor in art history Lotte Philipsen, artist Kristoffer Ørum (DK), artist and creative technologist Mirabelle Jones, as well as the people behind the world’s first AI-generated sci-fi magazine; Infinite Odyssey (MX).

Throughout the week, we will receive a general, hands-on introduction to working with AI tools like Midjourney and ChatGPT, and we will experiment with these tools to create a collective project that will be displayed at Kulturværftet when the Summer Camp concludes.

This year, the camp is facilitated by Philip Pilekjær. Philip is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and has been working as an editor at the Zurich-based art and culture media PROVENCE Magazine since 2019. As an artist, he regularly contributes to exhibitions both domestically and internationally and serves on the board of UKK – the Organization for Artists, Curators, and Art Mediators.

Jared Madere

Artist Jared Madere’s work is the product of an obsession with the limits of human subjectivity. His art is a haven for extreme emotions. It’s where associations become exploded from the inside out and new forms of mutilating meaning burst from the heart of familiar things.

He uses AI, generative imagery, and collaborations with artisans and craftspersons based on linguistic prompts, his practice employs automated systems within more traditional structures of signification as a means of eliciting an emotional response.

Mirabelle Jones

In a lecture presented by artistic researcher and creative technologist Mirabelle Jones, Jones will present a body of works, which explore ethical issues in artificial intelligence through participatory artistic research.

Using collaborative performance art to interactive installations built on technologies such as deep fake, natural language processing (such as ChatGPT), and computer vision as well as other technologies, Jones’s
work surfaces tensions between the self and the self as represented by data. A group discussion and question and answer session will follow the talk.

And, what are some of the aesthetic implications of having AI analyse traditional, visual art?

Background:

The Summer Camp is part of Kulturværftet’s program line CLICK, which is an experimental and investigative playground that explores the potential in the intersection of art, philosophy, science, and technology.

The Summer Camp is funded by Creative Europe and is part of the Rewilding Cultures project, where eight partners from different European countries exchange ideas and organize various camps and residencies, all based on the idea of repositioning “the wild” and creating a new focus on inclusivity and sustainability in relation to art, science, and technology by bringing together curious individuals in short, intensive, collaborative programs away from cities and everyday routines.
