Kunstnere Charlotte Jarvis og forsker prof. Susana Chuva de Sousa Lopes undersøger, hvordan fremskridt inden for videnskab, teknologi og kunstig intelligens ændrer vores syn på reproduktion.
In Loco Parentis sigter mod at engagere et mangfoldigt konsortium af potentielle stamcelledonorer, samfundsgrupper, etikere, lovgivere og en specielt trænet AI i muligheden for kollektivt at anvende pluripotente stamceller til at danne et ‘menneskeligt blastoid’ – dvs. en kunstig embryo ’opdraget’ af en kollektivt trænet kunstig intelligens. Kunstige embryoner har meget til fælles med kunstig intelligens. De er genstand for løbende og omskiftelige juridiske og etiske debatter, som flytter og definerer grænserne for, hvad vi betragter som ‘menneskeligt’ og ‘kunstigt’. Projektet handler om disse grænser – hvordan de dannes, på hvilket grundlag, og af hvem.

Tidligere har jeg groet min egen kræft, set mit hjerte slå uden for min krop og optaget musik ind i DNA. For nylig er jeg blevet interesseret i feministisk tilegnelse af reproduktionsteknologier. Jeg har i øjeblikket aktive projekter, hvor vi laver ‘kvindelig’ sæd, og en kollektiv livmoder – begge er helt ny videnskab. I dette residency vil jeg arbejde med et mangfoldigt team for at skabe et kollektivt kunstigt embryo, der skal opdrages af en kunstig intelligens.
I “Technologies of Gender” beskriver Teresa de Lauretis et perspektiv, der findes i “de sociale rum skabt i institutionernes mellemrum og i magt-viden-apparaternes sprækker og revner”. Lauretis taler om behovet for at finde et “synspunkt fra et andet sted” – en anden kontekst for dialog, som eksisterer mellem paradigmer. Jeg mener, at dette kan findes i krydsfeltet mellem kunst, videnskab, teknologi og etik. In Loco Parentis placerer sig selv præcis i det knudepunkt.
Kunstige embryoner har meget til fælles med kunstig intelligens. De er et smeltedigel for løbende og omskiftelige juridiske og etiske debatter rundt om i verden, som flytter og definerer grænserne for, hvad vi betragter som ‘menneskeligt’ og ‘kunstigt’. Projektet handler om disse grænser – hvordan dannes de, på hvilket grundlag, og af hvem?

Projektet integrerer videnskab, etik, jura, politik og kunst med det formål at fremme den offentlige debat om fremtiden for menneskelig reproduktion.’In Loco Parentis søger at udfordre traditionelle (patriarkalske) forældrestrukturer ved at stille spørgsmål ved etablerede magtdynamikker. Det sigter mod at fremhæve potentialet for alternative, samarbejdsdrevne reproduktive fremtider, der omfavner mangfoldighed og queernes. Vi betragter projektet som modigt, provokerende og relevant for nutidens samfund.

Artists Charlotte Jarvis and scientist Prof. Susana Chuva de Sousa Lopes are exploring how advancements in science, technology, and artificial intelligence are transforming our views on reproduction.
In Loco Parentis aims to engage a diverse consortium of potential stem cell donors, community groups, ethicists, lawmakers and a specially trained AI on the possibility of using pluripotent stem cells collectively to form a (mosaic) ‘human blastoid’ – a collaborative artificial embryo ‘parented’ by a collaboratively trained artificial intelligence.
Artificial embryos share much in common with Artificial Intelligences. They are a crucible for ongoing and volatile legal and ethical debate around the world which is shifting and defining the boundaries of what we consider to be ‘human’ and ‘artificial’. The project is about those boundaries – how are they formed, on what basis, and by whom?
In Loco Parentis aims to be what Donna Haraway describes as “split and contradictory”; to interrogate positions and be accountable; to generate “rational conversations and fantastic imaginings that change history.”
In the past I have grown my own cancer, seen my heart beat outside my body and recorded music onto DNA. Most recently I have become interested in feminist appropriation of reproductive technologies. I currently have active projects making ‘female’ sperm, and a collaborative uterus – both of which are completely new science. In this residency, I will be working with a diverse team to make a collaborative artificial embryo parented by an artificial intelligence.
In Technologies of Gender Teresa de Lauretis describes another perspective existing in the “social spaces carved in the interstices of institutions and in the chinks and cracks of the power-knowledge apparati”. Lauretis talks about the need to find a “view from elsewhere” – a different context for dialogue which exists in between paradigms. I believe this can be found at the intersection between art, science, technology and ethics. In Loco Parentis situates itself at that exact crunch point.

We are excited to introduce Charlotte Jarvis as our artist in residence at CLICK, presenting the project ‘In Loco Parentis,’ a collaborative artificial embryo ‘parented’ by a collaboratively trained artificial intelligence. The project integrates science, ethics, law, politics, and art with the goal of fostering public discourse on the future of human reproduction.
This ongoing project seeks to challenge traditional (patriarchal) parental structures by questioning established power dynamics. It aims to highlight the potential for alternative, collaborative reproductive futures, embracing diversity and queerness.
We view the project as bold, provocative, and relevant to today’s society, particularly considering the rapid advancements in AI technology. We look forward to offering our support and are genuinely excited about the potential outcomes.
